Senso - Polish National Opera (www >>)

Warsaw, Poland

An opera by Marco Tutino

Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera
Co-production: Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Massimo di Palermo

He didn’t love her, she was not a patriot. He was a soldier of the enemy’s army, she was passionately in love with him and didn’t mind. At least for a while. Marco Tutino’s opera Senso, commissioned by the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, was first presented at the season opening in January 2011. Already half a century ago Luchino Visconti made his famous film of the same title. In both cases, the inspiration came from Camillo Boito’s novella from 1883. In Venice under Austrian occupation, a tragedy unfolds: Countess Livia falls in love with an Austrian lieutenant. When she discovers he is unfaithful, she denounces him as a deserter, thus condemning him to death. (source: Teatr Wielki)

Director, Set and Costume Designer - Hugo de Ana
Choreography - Luigi Neri

Nabucco - Polish National Opera (www >>)

Warsaw, Poland

An opera by Giuseppe Verdi

Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra of the Polish National Opera, Polish National Ballet

Written when the composer was not yet thirty, Nabucco was Verdi’s third opera, but the first to bring him fame and immediately place him among the most famous musicians. The libretto by Temistocle Solera, loosely based on events from the Old Testament, tells the story of the legendary king of Babylon, Nebuchodnezzar, leading his army against the Hebrews. Solera combines biblical themes with typically operatic melodramatic ones, and the conflict unfolds on many planes: political, family, and religious. Issues such as opposition to injustice, oppression and violence reflected Verdi’s democratic views, and the political allusions were obvious at the time the opera was written. (source: Teatr Wielki)

The Nightingale - Polish National Opera (www >>)

Warsaw, Poland

An opera by Igor Stravinsky

Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera

This is actually a choreo-opera, aiming to delight with both its music and the beauty of its movement, colour, and choreographic gesture. This performance by the Mariinsky Theatre, presenting uniquely stunning visual images and perfect performance, has been a permanent item in the great theatre’s repertoire for many years. Stravinsky was the inventor of the themes for many of his stage pieces and the joint or sole author of the librettos. This concern for the literary and philosophical foundation of his works stemmed from his broader aesthetic and ethical concept, its essence being to restore the severed connection between Good and Beauty. The story of the marvellous bird whose wondrous song entertained, moved, and healed people is an excellent expression of this concept’s core idea. “And the nightingale sang so beautifully that tears came into the emperor’s eyes, and when they flowed down his cheeks the nightingale sang even more delightfully, and it went straight to his heart”, wrote Hans Christian Andersen in his fairy tale.
